The Ban the Bump Key campaign aims to outlaw the sale of specialist locksmith equipment to the general public. Our belief is that tools capable of opening doors to our homes and businesses should only be available to recognised locksmiths and security professionals.

Why?

  • Over 4 million websites mention lock bumping, a technique which can be used to open the cylinder locks found on approximately 65% of UK exterior doors.
  • Bump keys can be bought by anyone for just a few pounds.
  • Sites such as You Tube offer demonstrations and tips for mastering the technique.
  • Bump keys, lock breakers and lock picks should only be available to recognised locksmiths and security professionals.

How?
By signing the Ban the Bump Key petition you will be helping us to disarm thieves using specialist tools and techniques made widely available by the internet.  This petition will be lodged at the Houses of Parliament.

Protection Currently Available

  • Low-cost anti-lock bump protection is available. Pickbuster is a fluid shock absorber for cylinders which is easily applied and prevents from locks responding to bump keys.
  • Anti-bump cylinder locks, door chains, door bolts and letterbox restrictors are all security enhancements which can offer protection against walk-in crime.
